Why did my GFCI outlet trip, and why won't it reset?

Questions regarding ground faults, downstream moisture/overload, or a failed GFCI receptacle.

The answer

GFCIs trip within 25ms upon sensing a 4-6 mA current leak. If it won't reset:

  1. Upstream main breaker is tripped (no power)
  2. Ground fault or moisture remains active
  3. Line and Load wires were reversed during installation
  4. UL 943 self-test lockout reached (internal sensing circuitry degraded, unit permanently denied power).
